Investment in Non-Residential Construction Increases For First Time Since 2008

A recent report from StatsCan marking the end of its second quarter states that investment in non-residential building construction reached $10.1 billion in the second quarter, up 1.2% from the previous quarter. This is the first increase the industry has seen since the fourth quarter of 2008, when the economy headed into the downturn. The second quarter increase was driven by higher spending on commercial and industrial buildings, while investment in the institutional component declined, ending 12 consecutive increases. Investment was still 7.7% lower than the value reported in the fourth quarter of 2008.
